The signal was given, and the boat moved on a short distance,and then stopped, and became immovable. I could hear distinctly repeated, I told you so,— it is a foolishscheme. — I wish we were well out of it. I elevated myself on the platform,and stated that I knew not what was the matter; but if they would be quiet,and indulge me for half an hour, I would either go on or abandon the voyage.I went below, and discovered that a slight maladjustment was the cause. Itwas obviated. The boat went on; we left New York; we passed through theHighlands; we reached Albany! — Yet even then, imagination supersededthe force of fact. It was doubted if it could be done again, or if it could bemade, in any case, oj any great value. 456

CHAPEL OF OUR LADY OF COLD SPRING THE Hudson bends out from Crow-Nest into a small bay; and in thelap of the crescent thus formed, lies snug and sheltered the little vil-lage of Cold Spring. It is not much of a place for its buildings, history, orbusiness; but it has its squire and postmaster, its politics and scandal, anda long disappointed ambition to become a regular landing-place for thesteamers. Then there are cabals between the river ferrymen, on which theinhabitants divide; the vote for the president, on which they agree (for VanBuren); and the usual religious sects with the usual schisms. The Presby-terians and Methodists, as usual, worship in very ugly churches; and theCatholics, as usual, in a very picturesque and beautiful one. (Vide theDrawing.) It is a pity, (picturesquely speaking,) that the boatmen on the riverare not Catholics; it would be so pretty to see them shorten sail off OurLady of Cold Spring, and uncover for an Ave Maria.
