Only the squire, the minister, and the doc-tor needed more. The problem now pressing for solution is, Howto secure these essentials under modern city con-ditions. Through the cooperation of the home muchhas been learned by school-children in the careand use of back yards. This has come aboutpartly through the school-garden work. Theschool garden is another wholly feasible meansfor the training of city children, and it has in itmuch educative value, if rightly conducted. By a modification and extension of the manual-

Half a Day for Books, Half a Dayfor Tools All of this work, to he well done, would call forconsiderable modifications of existing practice.First of all would be needed a simplification ofexisting courses of study. With such simplificationwould come spare time for the new work. It wouldprobably be possible, in a forenoon session of fourhours, say from 8.30 to 12.30, to do all of the aca-demic work needed, and in the afternoon to doshop and garden work and drawing of a substan-tial and useful kind. Some of the morning workwould be reinforced by the afternoon work. Thiswould be especially true of the language work andthe arithmetic. These modifications may seem revolutionary,but they are not as revolutionary as the changeby which the existing system has been built up.The effect would be to retain what of the presentwork is most useful, and to recover some of theformer elements which have been lost.
