old house grewmore and more aloof from the world, until,with closed blinds and chilling exterior, itconcealed all traces of life within, just asthe high board fence concealed the wealthof beauty and fragrance in its roses, lilies-of-the-valley, and other flowers which grewso luxuriantly in the garden. Dr. Joel Spald-ing, son of Captain Jonathan, and grandsonof Joel, the first, lived here with his sister But helping hands came to the rescue,and the house, after more than one hun-dred years since Joel Spaldings purchasein 1790, now starts out in a new role. Itstands to-day as a memento of the Wamesitgrant; as a link between the present and theold tavern days, its fireplaces, buried somany years under laths and plaster, oncemore sending out their cheery light; as amonument to the services of five braveold soldiers, and as a memorial of the grati-tude and love of the friends and patientsof Dr. Joel Spalding, and of the regardand the esteem of his brother Masons. The ancient tap-room, now the living-room, showing the restored fireplace house so richly endowed cannot fail to suc-ceed. When the house first came into our pos-session we had no thought of what the fu-ture might have in store. Soon rumorsof ancient fireplaces, into which kittens dis-appeared, only to reappear in other rooms,following mysterious passages in the oldchimney, caused us to sound walls and pryinto cracks; but the old chimneys kepttheir secrets well. Suddenly, the spirit ofadventure seized us, and stripping the pa-per from the walls of the hall, tearing offplaster and ripping off boards, out cameat last a fireplace, with the remains of amantel. It was not exactly what we hadexpected to find, as it was small and shal-low, but it was a fireplace. Next it was dis-covered to have a false back; then, a hintfrom a wise man sent us looking for a largerfireplace beyond, and we found it. Relicof the days when wood was to be had forthe asking, black with soot and gray withthe ashes
