k, shall have subscribed, they shall meetand elect officers; Article gth, affirming that eachmember shall be a New England man by birth,or the son of a member; Article loth, defining that,by a vote of two thirds, persons not having thesequalifications may be admitted; Article nth, ex-plaining that by a two-thirds vote, given vivavoce and entered on the records, a member maybe suspended. No fear of responsibility, it seems.The present masked method of admitting andsuspending by black balls was not known to thesehonorable gentlemen. Article I2th states thatthis Society shall have no power to impose secrecy. A brief extract from the minutes will informthe reader concerning the first public meeting: At a general meeting of the New EnglandSociety, held at the City Hotel on the 6th of May,1805, Wm. Henderson was named chairman andBenj. M. Mumford secretary. The articles ofassociation being read by the secretary, and itappearing to this meeting that the same had been 528 NEW ENGLAND MAGAZINE

James Watson, First President of the Society, 1805-1807 subscribed by more than seventy persons, nativesof the New England States, it was Resolved, To proceed to the election of officersaccording to the said articles; viz., president, twovice-presidents, four counsellors, and eight as-sistants; all upon one ticket; and on counting the ballots the following gentlemen appeared to havebeen elected: President — James Watson; Vice-Presidents— Ebenezer Stevens and Francis Bayard Win-throp; Board of Counsellors, Rufus King, Sam-uel Osgood, Abijah Hammond, Oliver Wolcott.
