trikes are few. Bridgeporthas one of the finest passenger-stations onthe line of the New Haven road, and twolarge and convenient freight depots. TheNew Haven operates every steamship thatsails from a Connecticut port. Bridgeporthas eighteen feet of water and ships enor-mous quantities of her manufactured prod-ucts to New York by sea. Bridgeport man-ufacturers are favored in the matter offreight rates, being given the New Yorkrates on shipments South and West. The practical bent of the Bridgeport mindis indicated in the public statues of EliasHowe, the inventor of the sewing-machine,and of P. T. Barnum, the first great Amer-ican showman, which adorn her publicsquares. New Haven enjoys a double fame,— inthe intellectual world, as the seat of YaleUniversity; in the workaday world, as theseat of half a thousand factories whose prod-ucts carry her name around the world. Firstin population, she is second in manufac-tures, with a total annual output exceedingforty million dollars in value.

These companiesbring into the State every year a golden tideof profits, larger in volume on a smaller in-vested capital than any other business of theState. Much of this money flows back intoother States for investment in real-estate,stocks and bonds, and mortgages; but alarge part of it goes into the channels ofbusiness in Connecticut, a refreshing andinspiring infusion, in no small degree ac-countable for the vigor of Connecticuts man-ufacturing-enterprises.
