Finally, in theeighteenth century, when the ruins ofHyde Abbey were pulled down, theremains of the noblest of Englishkings disappeared forever. Two generations after the death ofthe great Alfred, during the reign ofhis grandson Edgar, there arose apowerful reforming bishop, Ethelwoldby name. By him a new cathedralwas begun, of wonderful fashion, inwrought stone. By the side of themasons labored the monks. So manythe chapels, the chronicler tells us, sonumerous the columns, that a manmight easily be lost in the cathedral;and above all rose a mighty tower WINCHESTER CATHEDRAL. 37
