The New-England Journal OF MEDICINE AND SURGERY. Vol. X. JANUARY, 1821. No. L On the Treatment of Cynanche Trachealis ; being part of a Dis-sertation on that Disease, which obtained the Boylston Prizefor 1820. By William Sweetser, Jun. M.D. (Communicated for the New England Journal of Medicine and Surgery.) N speaking of the treatment of Cynanche Trachealis, we shallconsider it a disease strictly inflammatory, for doing which wehave the authority of many of the latest and best writers on it. Much injury, as it regards the management of this complaint, may be the consequence of the opinion, which is even now toocommon, that it is spasmodic ; and I believe with Dr. Ferriar, that, Many valuable lives have been sacrificed to the imaginarypowers of assafoetida, or small repeated doses of antimonials, from unfounded theories of spasmodic constriction attending thedisease. This gentleman considers croup as truly inflammatory,as pleurisy, or peripneumony, and not to be more accompaniedwith spasmnewenglandjourna10bost
