The battle took place near the town of )\Ialdon, on the banks of the tidal river Panta, now called the Blackwater. The town lies on a hill; immediately at its base flows one branch of the river, while another, still crossed by a mediaeval bridge, flows at a little distance to the north. The i Danish ships seem to have lain in the branch nearest to the town and their i crews to have occupied the space between the streams, while Brihtnoth came to the rescue from the north. *Popul.-\tioii, 5,600 (1901); 44 miles from London (Liverpool St. terminus of Greati Eastern Kaihvay). Parish churches: All Saints, living, a vicarage; St. Mary, living, f arecfory. Other churches and chapels: Congregational; 2 Baptist; Wesleyan; Primi- tive Methodist; Friends. Three banks.
