| Description |
English: The Needles: Needles Old Battery The threat of French invasion saw the battery built on this dramatic spot in 1862. In the lookout tower, from alongside which we are looking now, the position of enemy ships was calculated and radioed down to the gunmen below. The guns were not capable of reaching right across the Solent but along with apparatus on the mainland shore, the whole width of the channel was covered.
The battery fell into disuse in the decade following the Second World War, and it lay idle and decaying until the National Trust brought it back to its former glory in the Seventies. |
