Description

Story of Queen Artemis: The Monument. Pen, brown and black ink, wash, white highlights over chalk. 40 × 55 cm. Bibliothèque Nationale, Paris.

This is one of a series of tapestry designs on the theme of Artemisia, the legendary queen whose iconography was adopted by Catherine de' Medici, both queens being regents on behalf of their children and immortalising their dead husbands in grandiose architectural projects. The drawing depicts a circular mausoleum, suggestive of the Saint-Denis rotunda Catherine commissioned in 1563 as a setting for the tomb of her dead husband, Henry II, and herself (Chastel, 257–58).
