Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Monument, City of London. Said to be designed by Sir Christopher Wren to commemorate the Great Fire of London in 1666 (although very largely the work of William Hooke) this is the tallest free-standing stone column in the world. It is 202 feet high, that being its distance from the spot at which the fire started in Pudding Lane. It is worth climbing the 300-odd steps to the viewing platform for the magnificent panorama of London spread out beyond. The column was also intended to act as a laboratory for astronomical and scientific experiments undertaken by Hooke.
