Description |
English: Satire on William Pitt's administration implying that, contrary to the suggestion in BM Satires 4148 ("The Cat's Paw"), Lord Bute has been rejected. An interior of a room with a blazing fire in which a large boot (Bute) is burning beneath a thistle. Bute, as a monkey with a plaid, has fallen on the ground, defecating, as a pack of dogs attacks him under the istructions of Pitt, shown as a dog with a human head, resting on crutches. The dogs are identified by the names on their collars as, from left to right: Charles Townshend, Chancellor of the Exchequer, who hangs his head fearing that he mifht h"have got upon a wrong scent here"; William Beckford, M.P. for London; Lord Camden, Lord Chancellor; Henry Seymour Conway, Secretary of State for the Northern Department, who tells Bute that he is "not of the Talbot Breed", presumably referring to the boxing prowess of Earl Talbot, a supporter of Bute; the Duke of Portland, Lord Chamberlain until 27 November 1766; Lord Grafton, First Lord of the Treasury. On the right, Princess Augusta kneels begging, "O spare my Monkey"; the young king, standing on the tail of the sleeping British lion replies, "Indeed Mamma I cant". On the wall to left is a painting entitled "Chatum in Prosperity" with the sun rising above the port; on the right, is a painting of "Isle of Bute in Adversity" showing Scots scratching themselves against posts and tumbledown houses, with the sun in eclipse. The chimney-piece is a crown with surrounded by a wreath of laurel.

[edit]This image is in the public domain because it is a mere mechanical scan or photocopy of a public domain original, or – from the available evidence – is so similar to such a scan or photocopy that no copyright protection can be expected to arise. The original itself is in the public domain for the following reason:
This tag is designed for use where there may be a need to assert that any enhancements (eg brightness, contrast, colour-matching, sharpening) are in themselves insufficiently creative to generate a new copyright. It can be used where it is unknown whether any enhancements have been made, as well as when the enhancements are clear but insufficient. For known raw unenhanced scans you can use an appropriate {{PD-old}} tag instead. For usage, see Commons:When to use the PD-scan tag. Note: This tag applies to scans and photocopies only. For photographs of public domain originals taken from afar, {{PD-Art}} may be applicable. See Commons:When to use the PD-Art tag. |
