Description |
English: The Missionary Brig Camden Which sailed from London on the 11th of April 1838... having on board the Revd John Williams and 9 other Missionaries and their wives A coloured lithograph ship portrait of Brig Camden. The full inscription reads: 'The Missionary Brig Camden which sailed from London on the 11th of April 1838... having on board the Revd John Williams and 9 other Missionaries and their wives'. The Camden is shown passing the Needles, off the Isle of Wight. In 1839, working from the Camden, John Williams was killed during a missionary trip in in the New Hebrides in 1839. John Williams’ death resulted in seven John Williams ships sailing for the London Missionary Society between 1844 and 1968. The London Missionary Society was a protestant society which was primarily Congregationalist. Founded in 1795, the Society’s missionaries travelled to the Pacific Islands, China, India and Africa. See record ZBA5595 for duplicate. |
