Description
English: On 15 June 1849 the attack of the Austrian army led by Field Marshal Julius Jacob von Haynau and the Russian army led by Field Marshal Ivan Paskevich started. Against this hugely superior enemy the Hungarian troops led by General Artúr Görgei were not enough.

On the main front Görgei's troops were pushed back, and despite his victory in the Second Battle of Komárom from 2 July, he could not lead the operations afterward because he was severely wounded in that battle. After the defeat of the Hungarians led by General György Klapka (who replaced Görgei during his convalescence) on 11 July, and conforming to Kossuth's plan of concentration of the Hungarian armies in Southern Hungary, Army of the Upper Danube had to retreated from Komárom towards the Tisza river. On 11 July the first Austrian troops entered Buda and Pest. At the same time, Northern Hungary was invaded by the Russian main army of 135,000 men led by Paskevich, pushing back the Hungarian 16,000 soldiers. On 20 June the first Russian troops led by General Lüders entered Transylvania, pushing back the troops of Józef Bem.

In Southern Hungary too, the Austrian troops of Lieutenant General Jelačić pushed back the Hungarians.
