'The Middy on the stage' appears to have been a character from a burlesque show 'Army & Navy', probably along the lines of 'The Middy ashore', which had featured a young woman in a sailor's costume dancing a hornpipe, and had been a great success in the 1860s. This caricature dates from 1887.
