In every case,except possibly that of Hq = 37*4, thewire was put through several cycles oftwist in which the load varied betweenthe limits ± 2000 grammes, and thenthe magnetising current was put through20 cycles of reversal before the observa-tions for Bq and W were made. Thepositive and negative signs indicate thatthe weights were hung on the right- andleft-hand sides of the wheel respectively.In the actual experiments on the effectof torsion on Bn and W the torsion was 40000 0 always positive, the load being initiallyzero, then increasing to 2000 grammes,and then decreasing to zero. In theideal case of perfect symmetry about thestate of no torsion, the part of the curvefor negative torsions would be exactlysimilar to the part of the curve for posi-tive torsions. The results are given inthe following table, and are exhibited infig. 9 :—
