e horses achance, horses that cannot stay a distance.But much as I bslievc in long-distance racesI should not like to see us revert to theold days of four-mile heats or four-mile racesin which they crawled for three miles and ahalf and raced for half a mile. It may perhapscome as a surprise to some of my readers that astraight mile takes more staying than anyother course. An experienced jockey told me thatin all his experience he had only ridden threehorses that could gallop a mile from end to end.Then Mr. Angas would raise the weights to aminimum of 7 st. I am sure he has never con-sidered what an unfair thing that would be to thebest horses. It would have raised Velocitysweight in the City and Suburban to 10 st. 2 lb.,and in the Kempton Jubilee Handicap to 10st.12 lb. ; and it would have brought Bridge ofCannys weight in the Gre3t Yorkshire Handi-cap at Doncaster to 93t. 11 lb. No great weightsto carry either, ib may be said. Perhaps not,but very serious weights—indeed, impossible
