He was also loyal and devoted to the tradition of his Scotchancestry, and was well versed in the history of that country. He ownedat one time a beautiful portrait of the famous Flora MacDonald, donein oil, when she was sixteen years old. It was a valuable and highlyprized piece of art, which he told me was a bona fide likeness of hisillustrious kinswoman. Many years have passed since I saw this por-trait, but the impression made upon my mind has never been obliterated.The beauty of the Scotch lassie fascinated me; and would that I coulddescribe it for the pleasure of my readers just as it impressed me.
