From the same spot many aramble may be enjoyed up the becks and dales, and aholiday might indeed be well spent if one exploredno farther than the neighbourhood of this lovely lakeand the hamlet at its head. CHAPTER XII ACROSS THE BORDER AFTER all, perhaps, the most interesting associations ofthe London and North-Western Railway occur inconnection with the part it plays as the great WestCoast Route to Scotland. It is strange now to thinkof the day when the putting of an army of 50,000 or100,000 men across the Scottish Border was a tre- 88 Across the Border mendous national undertaking, which taxed Englandto the utmost. To-day this railway line alone trans-ports as great a host across the Border every monthwithout fuss or disturbance, and in as many hours asit took weeks in times gone by. And perhaps nothinghas done more to finally cement the union betweenthe two countries, which once were so often at war,than this link of constant and easy communicationbetween North and South.

Just over the march the L. & N.W. 8q 12 London and North-Western Railway sunny slope of Gretna Green village seems to echo yetthe hoof-beats of romantic runaway marriage-partiesof a hundred years ago, and the whole country beyondthat, northward, is strewn with the memory of heroicaction and romantic happening.
