We know now7 that these 5 London and North-Western Railway were needless fears. Instead of spoiling the appear-ance of the country, the railway to-day forms one of itsmost interesting features. The sight of a train thread-ing its way among the Cumberland fells or along aScottish mountain-side adds just the needed life andcontrast to the scene. No one thinks of smoke andnoise as he sees the magnificent corridor expressessweeping through the shires. And as for the crowds oftrippers, they have chosen their own resorts by theseashore, and prefer to leave the quiet places in thecountry severely alone. As the dalesman or the High-lander sees the tiny white plume of steam running faramong the hills, it seems to him now
