uthport itself there wereonly a few fishermens huts and a tiny haven for thefisher-boats. It was only in 1792 that William Sutton, of Church-town, noticing the number of people who had begun 58 West Coast Watering-Places to make their way daily to the spot for sea-bathing,set up a booth, made of the shore wreckage, for thesupply of light refreshments. Sutton was laughed atby his neighbours, and called a fool for his pains, buthe lived to see his booth grow into the Original Hotel,and the few fishermens hatsdevelop into a prosperouswatering-place, which wasafterwards to absorb Church-town itself. Southport has now a residentpopulation of 55,000 souls, andis one of the most charmingand fashionable resorts on theBritish coasts. Its sandy soilis dry and warm, its air is ofthe purest, and it has beenfurnished with all the amenitiesand means of amusement thatholiday-makers of the betterclass at the present daydemand. Its Zooand its Botanic Gardens, its Hesketh Park and VictoriaPark, to say nothing of numerous bowling-greens andrecreation-grounds, afford pleasant sheltered haunts inthe wildest weather. The sea-bathing is unsurpassed; 59 London and North-Western Railway the spacious Marine Lake and the blue waters of theopen sea afford boating, and yachting, and steamer-sailing of every degree and variety, and the miles ofsuperb sands, changed and washed at every turn ofthe tide, form a matchless sunning-place and sporting-ground for old and young. For good weather or bad, besides, there existendless amusements of the most up-to-date sort.There is military music practically all day, and allsummer long, in the Municipal Gardens, where atnight myriads of lamps, and the illuminated fountains,gleaming among the trees, make, with the brilliantmoving crowds, a veritable fairy-land.
