There he called Lambertto join him, and with 10,000 menmarched down Ribblesdale tointercept the Scots. The Dukes army, which had been joined by 3,000English recruits, was straggling across the Kibble atPreston when, like a thunderbolt, Cromwell descendedon its flank. The second action at Preston took place in Novem-ber, 1715, and as it occurred on the same day as theBattle of Sheriffmuir in Scotland, marked the close ofthe Jacobite Rebellion of that year against KingGeorge I. Under the Earl of Derwentwater and Mr.Forster a little force of Catholic and Jacobite gentlemenhad assembled in Northumberland, and proclaimed King James III.3 They were joined by 2,000Highlanders under Brigadier Mackintosh, whom theEarl of Mar, leader of the rising in Scotland, had sentsouth to beat up the country, and they marched intoLancashire, where the Catholic party was strongest.Here they found the troops of King George
