s will consist practi-cally of two square vertical boxes connected together by a hori-zontal box open on top. For the support of a single boiler thebeams are of the same width as the columns but for a battery oftwo boilers it has been found advisable to make the beams twoinches wider than the columns in each case. The forms for thebeams and columns should be completely finished before startingto place the concrete. The footings for the columns may be madein advance, thus providing a suitable support for the forms, but itshould be noted that the vertical reinforcing bars in the columnsshould extend down into the footings (as indicated in Figures iand 2) and should therefore be placed when the foundations arebeing built. For the sake of convenience, short bars (extendingabout three feet above the foundation) may be used if preferred, the main reinforcing bars being wired to these short bars later. The size of the column footings or foundations should be such as IQIQ. i THE LOCOMOTIVE. 133

Foraverage conditions, the outside dimensions of the footings shouldbe about two feet larger than for the columns but this rule shouldbe used with caution and each case should be carefully consideredby itself. DIMENSIONS. The accompanying tables give the necessary dimensions andother essential details for constructing beams and columns inaccordance with Figures i and 2 for the usual sizes of horizontaltubular boilers. The headings used in the tables appear on thefigures also so that there should be no difficulty in understandingwhat is meant. For convenience in tabulating, separate tables aregiven for beams and for columns although each beam with its twocolumns should be constructed as a unit. Tables A and B are tobe
