Some engineerfs, whenerecting boilers, attach thesteam-gauge directly to theuptake, or to the portion ofthe cast iron front whichcovers the end of the boilerand forms the front connrc-tion. This should never bedone, as under such circum-stances the heat will inevita-bly injure the spring, and thegauge will in a short timeindicate anything but the cor-rect pressure. Much troublehas been caused boiler own-ers by this practice. The gauge should be carried to one side and secured to the brickwork; or, if for any reason this is undesirable or impossible, it should be brought out

(November, far enough from the boiler front to allow a good thickness of some non-conductingmaterial to be placed between it and the boiler, sufficient to effectually prevent injury. The second of the above objects is generally accomplished by attaching the gaugeto a pipe bent into the form shown in Fig. 2. This form of siphon, while it accomijlishcsperfectly what it is designed to do, namely, the keeping of a body of water on the spring,))Ossesses the disadvantage of not allowing the pipe to be cleared of sediment witlioutremoving the gauge and causing great inconvenience. Moreover, whenever a pipe bentinto this form becomes filled up with a solid deposit, which sometimes happens, it ispeculiarly difficult to clean out, owing to the impossibility of driving a rod or wire through it. It is also impossible to clear a siphon ofthis type of water when it is necessary to do so, whichoccurs when a boiler is stopped for any cause in coldweather. In such cases, unles
