hich al-most defies any effort one mightmake to read it. Robert Lincolns handwritingchanged considerably during hislifetime; however, while he wasa student at Phillips ExeterAcademy and later at HarvardUniversity, his script was quitelegible (except for a name orword here and there). The Foundation collection hasa facsimile letter which Robertwrote to his mother on Decem-ber 2, 1860. The stationery bearsa letterhead of Phillips ExeterAcademy although Robert leftthe academy before his fatherwas elected President. However, he returned to Exeterfor a visit of about a month after the 1860 election. Theexuberant letter follows: Dec. 2, 1860Dear Mother — You see I am back at Exeter and I feel very muchat home. I am here with Dick Keconkey (Cluskey?). Wehave been in a constant round of dissipation sincewe came. On Thursday we were at dinner at MissGales On Friday Mr. Tuck gave a large party whichpassed off very finely. Mr. T. thinks of going toChicago in about three weeks and thence to St.
