Description

I have been reading "The Language God Talks - On Science and Religion" by Herman Wouk

Feynman asked Wouk once: "Do you know calculus?" Wouk admitted he did not. Feynman replied: "You had better learn it, It's the language God talks." Wouk never learned calculus, I think this is a good reminder for me to brush-up my calculus.

Feynman also told Wouk: "You know, while you're talking you're not learning anything."

One theme comes from something Richard Feynman said: "It doesn't seem to me that this fantastically marvellous universe, this tremendous range of time and space and different kinds of animals, and all the different planets, and all these atoms with all their motions, and so on, all this complicated thing can merely be a stage so that God can watch human beings struggle for good and evil - which is the view that religion has. The stage is too big for the drama."

Wouk later has the curtain go up on the Humanist drama as follows: He has made everything beautiful in its time and has put the universe in their hearts, except that a man will not find the work that the Lord has wrought from beginning to end. Ecclesiastes 3:11 and links this to a Feynman quote: "I was born not knowing and have only a little time to change that here and there."

A bit later, Wouk tells the story of good advice he got from Raul Hilberg about writing The Winds of War: "You have to find your structure."
