[edit]DescriptionThe Lady Florance Stone - geograph.org.uk - 557924.jpg |
English: The Lady Florance Stone A stone noted on the 1:25000 Explorer Map on a northern shoulder of Longgrain Head to the east of Long Grain, placed to commemorate a daring piece of horsemanship, or rather horsewomanship. The inscription on the stone has weathered over the years, but is as follows:
"This stone commemorates Lady Florance Cust's daring ride straight down this brae with the Eskdale Hounds, 20th February, 1861." (Source: The Ewes Valley by Brenda I Morrison and R Bruce McCartney). Lady Florence Harriet Lascelles was born in 1838, the daughter of Henry Lascelles, 3rd Earl of Harewood and Lady Louisa Thynne. She married Lt-Col John Francis Cust on 31st January 1861. She died on 18th November 1901. (Source: thePeerage.com website). |
