ing her board, keep and $20 a month; Lew, 25,was helping his lather in a dry-cleaning shop. A year after they met theygot mat ried in city hall and spent their honeymoon traveling to New Yorkwith friends. For right years they worked together in the same editorialoffice, but with the coming of Barbara, their partnership took on a differentshape. \X hen Lew was drafted, Mary and the baby followed him to camp, and homeless, caught in the Armys vasl machine, the) dreamed rosy dreamsof the nee hit ul land, the home, the loving family they were going to maketheirs, willy-nilly, when peace came. Now, Lew says, we are bent onmaking tho-e dreams come true. We are trying to carve a little nichefui ourselves . . . seeking within ourselves an answer to insecurity. I he children are in bed by 7:30, the door closed on the room and the apartment, warmed by the wood stove, is relaxed. Because of their slim wardrobe, Marywashes and irons three times weekly; Lew brings the budget book up to date nightly.
Text Appearing After Image:
First of all, it was fun. It had to be, or we couldnt have doneit at all. There had to be loving co-operation and a spirit of ad-venture. There had to be give and take, and we had to developourselves and use our home for recreation and entertainment—which is a dividend that does not show on our books. There are four of us: self, wife, daughter aged 5, and daughtergoing on 2. I am 36. Mary is 32. We came out of the Army a little over a year ago, wonderingwhat to do, where to go and how to get there. We had believed, and still do, that we should be receiving some of the benefits ofthe American way of life. We had it planned beautifully—a newhome, a new car and all that fine stuff of which dreams are made. It took us six months of loafing, having our new baby, policymaking and job hunting to get to the point of starting again. When I landed that good job we were down to scratch. Nocar. No house. No radio. No furniture (that was sold sixmonths after Uncle Sams historic greeting came).
