Let us see, too, why we needpublic education, what our educational needs are, how our schools areset up and wherein they are failing and succeeding before we determineour manner of support. Early in our history, when the newly established America wasstruggling to break away from European ideas of education and estab-lish education for the people, by the people, Thaddeus Stevens, aVermonter, was asked by an aristocrat who sent his children toprivate schools why one should be called upon to support publicschools when he had no intention of using them. Mr. Stevens repliedsuavely, I trust it is not your intention to use the public jails yousupport either? With this thought—that the public schools are theconcern not only of parents, but of all citizens of our society—let usfirst take up the question of why we need education. A healthy public-school system means a healthy nation—andit also means a wealthy one.
