By a long series of mis-takes and failures, dating back over a spanof more than twenty years, we had in 1941 letit become too late to save ourselves by peace-ful methods; in the end we had to fight. Thisis not true today. If we act now, with vigorand understanding, with steadiness andwithout fear, we can peacefully safeguardour freedom. It is only if we turn our backs,in mistaken complacence or mistrustingtimidity, war may again become inevitable.How soon thi; nation will fully under-stand the size and nature of its present mis-sion, I do not dare to say. But I venture toassert that in very large degree the future ofmankind depends on the answer to thisquestion. And I am confident that, if theissues are clearly presented, the Americanpeople will give the right answer.
