Somehad sustained him in the anti-Masonicracket and elected him to the StateSenate in 18-30. Many had supportedhim, hut unsuccessfully, as Whig can-didate for Governor of New York in1834, being then but 32 years of age.Four years later they elected him on thesame ticket. They found in him afamous Governor. One who sustainedinternal improvements and made anissue on the slave oligarchy by refusingthe request of the Governor of Virginiato return three negro seamen chargedwith aiding slaves to escape. They re-elected him Governor andwould have done so again but for hisrefusal to run in IS (2. They were with him in enthusiasticsupport of Clay. They elevated him to the Senate ofthe United States in 1849 and re-elected him in 185.). He was one ofthe founders of the Republican party.
