ich he identified eachone of the peripheral nerves. His investigations led him to radical advance in neurologicalsurgery. The tearing out of a nerve, he demonstrated, resulted indegeneration of the central as well as the peripheral portion of thenerve, since the degeneration was due to the atrophy of the cellsfrom which it originated rather than the mere separation of thenerve. Dissection of the nerve prevented such violent injury to thenerve. In obstinate neuralgia of the trigeminal nerve he advocatedthe bringing about of atrophy of the originating cells and so de-struction of the nerve and elimination of j)ain by excision of thenerve branches. He worked on the organic lesions in dementia pr^ecox, searchedout the pathogenic processes of rabies, solved the problem of theinhibitive fibers of the heart by tracing the connection of thesefibers to the pncumogastric nerve itself instead of to the spinalnerve and contributed much to the knowledge of acute anteriorpoliomyelitis in the adult.
