braces, in whole or in part, the terri-tory of the tribes of Simeon, Judah, Dan, Benja-min, and Ephraim. The name of each tribe isinscribed in large red letters, and is accompaniedby an explanatory text, taken from the Bible. Inthis way parts of Jacobs blessings are worked intothe design, as Zebulon has Genesis xlix., 13;Ephraim, Genesis xlix., 25 ; and parts also of theblessing of Moses. Benjamin has Deut. xxxiii.,12, written beneath it, and Ephraim has Deut.xxxiii., 13. These inscriptions will no doubt havesome value in the department of sacred criticism ofthe Bible. Other explanations are taken literallyfrom the Oiiomasticon of Eusebius. At certainpoints of the map these inscriptions occupy thewhole of the surface, interferinof somewhat with itsclearness, but no doubt serving an important pur-pose in the eyes of its makers.
