Thekitchen tent contained the provisions, the coal, thebarley for the horses, and gave some shelter to themuleteers on the cold nights of the journey. One never ceases to be surprised at the hundredlittle contrivances and conveniences which cametumbling out of our rough looking bundles, from thelanterns to the flag poles, and at the speed with whichour skilful muleteers took down or set up this mov-ing habitation in the wilderness. The first few dayson such a trip are generally days of disagreementand adjustment among the muleteers, but after thatall moves along smoothly—provided you have aman who knows his business and treats the menfairly.
