here are one or twotine estates, especially the Raneho de Colder on, upon which aconsiderable quantity of sugar-cane is annually grown. Theproprietors of this hacienda are the principal business men ofEl Barrio. Immediately east and south of El Barrio are a number ofsmall settlements embraced within the limits of the estates ofMarquesanas : these include La Ghivela, Tarifa, Santiago, andAgua Escondida. The hacienda of La Chivela, situated on theplains, at the entrance of the pass of the same name, 780 feetabove the Pacific Ocean, and twelve miles southeasterly fromEl Barrio, has a population of about seventy-five persons, andsome fifteen or twenty ranchos. As a settlement, it is only im-portant as being the residence of the chief guarda de ganado ofthe Marquesanas, the property of Don Estavan Maqueo, andthe principal place for the sale of cattle belonging to the estate. TOWNS, PRODUCTIVE INDUSTRY, ETC. 245 Piedra Parada, is surrounded by an amphitheatre of hills, andcontains a population of sixty inhabitants, who are the employeesof the estate. Its elevation is 800 feet above the Pacific, andthe Wine-palm grows in great abundance all throughout itsvicinity. Tarifa, built on the plains of that name, derives some in-terest from its being the point selected by Senor Moro for thewestern termination of his ship-canal feeder, which was to con-duct the waters of the Chicapa and Ostuta rivers along thesouthern slope of the Albricia range to the summit-level of theseplains. It is possible that the waters of the Rio del Corte mightbe brought to Tarifa on a shorter distance, at a much less cost,and a more abundant supply obtained. But little doubt, how-ever, exists that from either of these sources a sufficiency of wa-ter for the summit-level of a ship-canal, with capacity to pass100 ships per day, might be brought.
