ri-ous antiquity of all India. It is a wonderfully fine forging, 50feet long and 16 inches in diameter. It rises 22 feet aboveground — the remainder is below ground. There are severalweird legends connected with its history, and its exact date isunknown, but it is certain that it extends back into the past toa date before our boasted Western civilization even had a begin-ning. It records its own history in Sanskirt in a deeply cutinscription on its face, and students assign the third or fourthcentury after Christ as the date of this inscription. Iron Pillar of Delhi, with Arch of Kutub to the Right beams are about twice as deep in the center as at the ends,showing that the people of that remote age understood how todistribute the material in the beams to the best advantage. Itis exceedingly interesting to know that these great forgingswhich were made over fifteen hundred years ago still stand asa monument to the ancient industries of India.
