The Young Mens Christian Association of San Francisco is the second ofthe kind, in numbers, influence and practical work done, in the land, and oneof the first institutions of the city. The total membership is nearly 1,500. The headquarters are on the north 18 THE INDUSTRIES OF SAN FRANCISCO. side of Sutter Street between Kearney and Grant Avenue. The library eon-tains a large number ot choice volumns, while the reading room is well sup-plied with standard newspapers, magazines and religious literature. A wellequipped gymnasium affords abundant opportunities for invigorating exercise.Baths are also provided. Gospel meetings, devotional services, social reunionsand literary exercises are held at stated periods. The parlors and rooms areelegantly furnished and no efforts are spared to make members and strangersfeel at home. Young men are always welcome. The Y. W. C. A. is likewise in a flourishing condition and is doing a goodwork among young women.

It contains a choice col-lection of minerals and shells, together with specimens of every order of animallife and natural curiosities of all kinds. The officers of the Society are H. YV.Harkness, president; H. H. Behr, istvice president; George Hewston, 2d vicepresident; Frederick Gutzkow, corresponding secretary; J. R. Scupham, record-ing secretary; I. E. Thayer, treasurer; Carlos Troyer, librarian; J. G Cooper, director of museum. The San Francisco Art Association organized March 28, 1S71. It seeksthe promotion of painting, sculpture and kindred arts, together with the culti-vation of aesthetic tastes. The officers are: President, L. L. Baker; First YicePresident, John A.
