promulgatedin Mexico in 1824 by which California became a republican territory. It was in the year 1S35 and at the instance of Figueroa that the village ofYerba Buena was founded. The name was applied to the northeastern ex-tremity of San Francisco peninsula, including Black Point on the north andRincon Point on the south. Figueroa also established the system of municipalgovernment in the territory, and did much toward improving the condition ofthe country. The year 1846 was a notable one. On the fourth of July, Captain JohnC. Fremont, who had come into this region at the head of a scientific andexploring expedition, issued a proclamation of independence, and declaredwar against Mexico. On the seventh of the month, Commodore Sloat whohad recently arrived on this Coast with the frigate Savannah and anothersmaller vessel, hoisted the American Flag at Monterey, and proclaimed the terri-tory a part of the United States. This date marks the beginning of the THE INDUSTRIES OF SAX FRANCISCO.

8 THE INDUSTRIES OF SAN FRANCISCO. American conquest. The stars and stripes were raised at Yerba Buena nextday by Captain Montgomery of the war-sloop Portsmouth. The successfultermination of the Mexican war confirmed the Americans in their possessionof California. The first newspaper was published in Yerba Buena, January 9, 1847. Onthe 30th of the same month, the name of the place was changed to SanFrancisco. The population at this time was 469. Gold was discovered in Coloma, forty-five miles east of Sacramento on theAmerican river, January 19, 1S48. James W. Marshall had contracted withCaptain John A. Sutter for the construction of a saw-mill, and was engagedwith his men in cutting and widening the tail race. The water of the riverwas allowed to run through the cut. Marshall was examining the mass ofdebris that had accumulated at the lower end of the race, when the glitter ofa bright yellow substance in the water attracted his attention.
