s built in 1878. The lowerdam, the construction of which was begun in the Spring of 1887, is 170 feetthick at the base and has now reached a height of 120 feet. When completedit will be 170 feet high and 25 feet wide at the top. It will contain 200,000cubic yards of concrete requiring 250,000 barrels of cement and the total costwill be ^2,000,000. The company has projected and has in process of construction a tunnel23,500 feet in length from San Francisquito Creek on the border line betweenSan Mateo and Santa Clara counties to the reservoir formed by the lowerCrystal Springs dam, which reservoir will have a storage capacity of 32,000-000.000 gallons and will be much larger than is needed for its natural water shed.It is the purpose, therefore, to utilize it for storing the waters of San Francis-quito creek and other water-sheds: for that purpose the above mentioned tunnelis being constructed, with a diameter of about 11 feet in the clear, and a dis- 28 THE INDUSTRIES OF SAX FRANCISCO.

The pipe line and pumping works for utilizing the waters of Alameda creekwere put in operation last August. These works furnish an average daily sup-ply of about four million gallons during the dry season, which amount is doubledduring the time when rains prevail. The water is conveyed across SanFrancisco Bay by means of two 16 inch submarine pipes 60 feet below thesurface. In the city are 240 miles of pipe from three to twenty-four inches indiameter, while outside there are 75 miles of large mains whose diameter variesfrom 30 to 44 inches. Eighteen million gallons of water are consumed daily.The supply can be increased to fifty million gallons per day whenever necessaryand as ninty millions are stored in the city it is evident that no danger ne
