64 THE INDUSTRIES OF SAX FRANCISCO. W. T. GARRATT & CO. Brass Founders and Machinists, Corner Fremont and Natoma streets. The brass and bell foundry and machine and hydraulic works of W. T. Gar-ratt and Co. had their beginning in San Francisco in 1850. For years this wasthe only house where brass founding was done with similar mechanical laboron this coast. The business was small at the beginning but in 1853 took a def-inite shape and has continued to increase until now. The works are amongthe most important of the kind in the United States for the variety of theirproducts. The articles made include bells, hydrants, valves, faucets and mis-cellaneous castings, from the smallest to largest size, in brass, Babbit metal andother alloys. In irofi and general machine business, Messrs. W. T. Garratt andCo. make globe-valves, safety valves, fire hydrants, water and gas gates andcast iron fittings for large pipes.
