Why, he has resigned ! Then tell Magruder!He has resigned, too. General Joe Johnston, then!— He, too, has gone out! Smith Lee ? Ditto ! Good God! said Blair. Have all our good officersleft us? I hear these Blairs are at the bottom of all this warpolicy. Old Blairs country place was threatened, andhis family, including the fanatical Mrs. Lee, had to flyinto the city. This lady was the one who said to methat she wished the North to be deluged with the bloodof the South ere Lincoln should yield one iota ! Do not believe all you hear about the Northernsympathy for Lincoln. The Democrats still feel for theSouth. If Congress does not denounce Lincoln for hisunlawful and unconstitutional proceedings, I shall beginto think we have no country!

The lime of the taking of thephotograph was at one oclock P. M., as the Capitol clock at the top of the picture willshow.) CHAPTER XIWar Is Proclaimed Upon leaving the Federal capital we proceeded to thehome of Senator Clays cousin, Doctor Thomas Withers,at Petersburg, Va. My husbands health, already feeble,had suffered greatly from the months of strife whichculminated in the scenes through which we had justpassed, and we had scarcely arrived in Petersburg whena serious collapse occurred.
