dflags finished it all off. The dais, avery high one, was floored with bricks,and wide brick steps led up to it. A rope all round the dais kept thecrowds from coming too near. Thewhole of the remainder of the schoolquadrangle was one dense mass ofBaganda. Only big chiefs, some 200,could get into their side of the banda. About 170 English attended theceremony, and it was the largest gath-ering of the kind, I believe, that hadever yet met together in Uganda. Thenumbers of English coming were quitedouble what was expected. TheKatikiro sent two fatted oxen andfifty chickens and any amount of pota-toes and eggs collected from all thecountry round. I had promises ofsweets (tarts, jellies, etc.) from everylady in Kampala, and cakes for thetea from every lady in Namirembe.Two hundred and thirty sat down tolunch, sixty of them being Bagandacounty chiefs. The room only held200, but as some were finished theygave place to the others waiting out-side. Speeches of congratulationwound up the feast.

Let me take you intoa small room in that house. It wasonce a bedroom, but is now equippedwith a bench, three closets and a shelffor dressings, two packing-boxes forsupplies and a washstand for generalpurposes. It is here that I havetreated between six and eight thous-and sufferers each year. The day isapt to begin early, for some of thepatients arrive at 6 a. m., but unlessthe case is urgent they understandthat there will be no dressings untilafter breakfast.
