Summary

[edit]
Description
English: The Hotham Chantry, near to South Dalton, East Riding of Yorkshire, England.

A magnificent tomb for a significant man and family.

"The monument to Sir John Hotham (d 1689) is attributed to Bushnell and is similar to one in Hatfield, Herts. It was formerly in the old church. A knight in armour reclines on a slab supported by figures representing four of the virtues. Truth holds a mirror, Fortitude carries a broken column, Justice has a sword, and Temperance bears a pitcher of water. The skeleton under the slab is a reminder of the transient nature of this mortal life".
