Text Appearing Before Image:
associationsome stiff and stately tree for its fore-ground, as seen in our figure, 47, where theowner has planted two Scotch pines withina very few feet of the fountain; while thehouse, as a background, stands distantsome forty feet; the whole bringing outeach feature distinct and prominent, buteach an item of itself, without any associa-tion or harmony with the other. Had thissame fountain been placed a little to oneside, just where a glimpse of it could be had from the drawing-room windows, and thenhad for its association near by in thegrounds a weeping birch, a weeping beech, and an American weeping willow, it wouldhave been in itself and associations a fea-ture of beauty winter or summer, and inno way appeared as a foreground to thearchitecture of the house. I confess a dis-like, however, because of their want ofharmonious association to all of these mar-ble or cast iron fountains when placed inthe open grounds and in association onlywith an ordinarily kept garden or grounds. f//^%
Text Appearing After Image:
Fig. 48. In the conservatory, or in the center of anItalian garden, they are in place; but Ihave yet to see one in the open ground ofa small place, kept in the usual manner ofgardens in this country, that did not offendthe eye when silent, and detract from allelse when playing. As I have said that a fountain may behad at a little cost beyond that of thepipes and their laying, and at the sametime be made to harmonize with tree andvine surrounding, I offer the illustration, fig. 48, which is simply varied pieces ofrock laid x\\) around the center pipe, andhaving a wire-work frame, into the meshesof which are woven various colored stonesas the basin or urn. A circular pipe sur-rounds it, over which is laid a pavementof stone in mosaic work, and from betweenwhich numerous smaller jets of water arise. In the plinth of the structure, amid therocks, ferns and water-plants are planted. The mosaic pavement is level with thesurrounding turf, with just sufficient dip Landscape or Rome Adornment. 1
