A genus of grass is named after Orcutt, called Orcuttia. Orcutt was born on April 27, 1864, in Hartland, Windsor County, Vermont, and died August 25, 1929, in Haiti; he is buried in Port-au-Prince. Orcutt was married to Olive Lucy Eddy, the first woman to earn a Doctor of Medicine degree from the University of Michigan's Homœopathic Medical College at Ann Arbor (June 30, 1882). Orcutt traveled extensively on natural science expeditions in the southwestern United States, the Baja Peninsula, and Central America. He was on an expedition to Haiti when he passed away.
