The Haycock takes its name from a tale by Richard Braithwaite published in 1638 called 'Barnabae Itinerarium' about the adventures of 'Drunken Barnabee'. Barnabee arrived at Wansford and saw a cottage door inscribed with "Lord have mercy on me" realising that Wansford was in the grip of the plague he fell asleep on a haycock by the River Nene. The tale recounts the following events .... On a haycock sleeping soundly, Thriver rose and tooke me roundly; Downe the currrente, people cryed, Sleeping, down the streame I hyed, Where away, quoth they, from Greenland? No, from Wansford Brigs in England. |
