hree hundred and seventeen acres on thesouthwestern extremity of the Arlington Heights range. Itcommands a beautiful and extended view to the south andwest over the Charles River valley. To the west is Newton,and beyond are the Newton and Weston Hills. To the east,over Belmont, are Cambridge and Boston. The location andenvironment are ideal for the treatment of mental diseases. There are nine doctors on the staff. The capacity of theHospital is 220 patients. Last year 123 new cases were ad-mitted : the total number treated was 338. The clinical workof the hospital covers most types of mental disease. Thecottage plan is used; some are built to accommodate onepatient, otliers have a larger capacity. This facilitates theclassification of the various types. The McLean Hospital wasthe first institution in New England for the treatment of men-tal disease. John Jeffries and EdwardReynolds, one of whom had the happiness of restoringsight to his father by an operation for cataract. Soon afterthis, numbers of ophthalmic patients came to him for treat-ment. Most of the patients were poor and of the laboringclass. It revealed the fact that they are peculiarly liable toophthalmic disease. The two doctors hired a room in theScollay Building, where a free ophthalmic clinic was opened.After this clinic had continued sixteen months their good workwas reported in a public meeting. Following this, Mr. Lucius)\Ianlius Sargent took special interest in raising funds to pro-vide better accommodations.
