The Guildhall, Worcester

Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Designed by Thomas White in the Queen Anne style, the Guildhall was completed in 1721. Five free-standing stone figures surmount the roof above the cornice: one figure at each end, one vertically above the line of each Composite order relief column that support the tympanum arch, and one at the top of the arch. These figures represent Justice, Peace, Plenty, Chastisement and Hercules. Between the outer figures are two stone urns set equidistantly. The tympanum is richly ornamented with coloured carvings depicting the Royal Arms and flute-playing cherubs. Above each ground floor window is a stone plaque. Four bear floral designs and two depict a crossed sword and royal mace lined with gold. Above the apex of the ground floor architrave that frames the entrance is a niche in which is a free-standing, life-sized, sculpted figure of Queen Anne wearing a crown and holding a mace and royal orb. Beneath this figure a plaque bears the inscription 'Anna Regina'. On each side of the entrance are two more life-sized sculpted figures set in niches. On the left is depicted King Charles I who holds a mace in his right hand and a model of a church in his left. On the right of the entrance is the figure of King Charles II who holds a mace in his right hand and a royal orb in his left. Beneath each figure is a plaque bearing the title "Carolus I' and 'Carolus II' respectively.
