No. 18 FERDINAND VICTOR LEON ROYBET FRENCH (1840- ) THE GUARDSMAN The picture of a man-at-arms in the picturesque costume of the earlyseventeenth century, the epoch which this artist has made peculiarly hisown, and of which he has given us many fine studies. Before a curtainstriped in green and white he stands, a lank man-at-arms, in a long leatherjerkin, hound at the waist by a broad yellow sash; his breeches of blue aretrussed and pointed, and from his broad felt hat a long feather droops overhis shoulder. He is armed with a long halberd and a cross-handled sword,and he stands on guard, one gloved hand resting on his hip, the othergrasping his heavy weapon. Signed at the left, F. Roybkt. Height, 19 inches; width, 1 ii 4 iiu hes.

No. Ill BAREND CORNELIS KOEKKOEK DUTCH (1803-1862) LANDSCAPE IN HOLLAND Along a deep-rutted country road, which runs through the centre of thepicture, a small flock of sheep are being driven toward their stable. Oneither side of the road lie small pools of water, stagnant and covered withduckweed, and tumbledown buildings of brick and thatch stand close by.The road curves gently to the right beside a barn and farmhouse in themiddle distance, the red tiles of which the roof is formed standing outagainst the green of the trees which form its background. In the middledistance a group of trees forms a prominent object, the foliage tingedwith yellow and shining in the evening sunlight, which streams from acloud-covered sky, to make beautiful play of light and shadow upon theground beneath.
