[edit]DescriptionThe Great Stone - corner of Church Hill and Church Road, Northfield (4711216979).jpg |
While getting my shots of the Church of St Laurence, I saw this pub called The Great Stone. Although I didn't see it, next to the pub is the old village pound where, for safety reasons, the Great Stone is kept. Information above from Images of England: Birmingham Pubs by Keith Turner. It is a Grade II listed building. C18, added to. Timber-framed; painted brick; tile roof. One storey plus attic; 4 bays. Ground floor with 2 windows, the door with simple hood and another window. First floor with 2 windows. All windows casements, mostly of 3 lights. The left-hand return on Church Hill with a ground floor segment- headed window in the later addition and a ground floor later canted bay window in the original wall. The Great Stone, Northfield - Heritage Gateway Finding this area in Northfield was quite hard. I got lost getting from the Bristol Road South, going onto Great Stone Road, then onto Church Road (which led back to Northfield Town Centre). Then back via the Victoria Common, before I found a sign pointing right towards the Church of St Laurence. There must have been a village here a very long time ago, before the city came and swallowed it up. Northfield history I noticed an M & B on it in a zoom in, it must be a Mitchells & Butlers pub. |
